MILESTONE HEROES

Posted by lonelypond on May 30, 2009

MTV Splashpage just dropped its weekly roundup in my inbox + and the 5 out + proud heroes who would #rejectprop8 has drawn a lot of interest. Which clicked me through to the comments, which reminded me of my second favorite gay comic superhero couple(The Legion’s Lightning Lass and Shrinking Violet being #1), Milestone Media’s Donner and Blitzen, first of the Shadow Cabinet and then The World Needs Heroes. Static Shock is zipping around animatedly on some channels but Milestone Media shut down comic production in 1997. According to wikipedia, some of the characters might be brought back into the DC universe. That would be cool; Milestone aimed for diversity. I’m going to have to dig and find the box I have those comics stowed in. I have a signed set of the “The World Needs Heroes” mini series because they liked my why does the world need heroes answer letter best. We still do. Far too often.

NB: Apparently, I need to have been reading the JLA…Milestone characters including Donner and Blitzen appeared in #27. Time to have a talk with my comic guy. I really need to pay more attention to my Previews.

And Dwayne McDuffie, one of the Milestone founders, was just fired as the Justice League’s writer.

WHAT I’VE BEEN UP TO

Posted by lonelypond on May 29, 2009

Read the Rick Riordan Percy Jackson books, darn it…I’ve zipped through four of them in two and a half days, they’re chock full o’ adventure and Greek mythology and lots of cool girls, as well as the hero, Perseus Jackson, son of Poseidon. Want to read the fifth one, but first, must see if I can get a copy through the library(it’s hardcover and I don’t have that much of a book budget) and second, well it’s Shakespeare season.

And with Shakespeare season, comes vacations and frantically trying to fit in a Saturday rehearsal with blocking before one of the actresses leaves town for two weeks, which means I really need a set inspiration. I find myself tired of boxes and benches, but anything we’ve ever had more complicated than that has been subject to the vagaries of the wind — I could tell you stories and it would start with a play called The Tempest (yes, yes, that might have been a clue), a 15 foot ship’s mast with sails and a swimming pool.

So, the story of the Last Olympian must wait while I angle for inspiration. Theatre is an art they appreciated, after all.

WHITEOUT

Posted by lonelypond on May 27, 2009

And as I happily bop through the internet finding out more about the upcoming adaptation of one of my favorite mini series, I discover that they seem to have whited out one of the central characters, Lily Sharpe, and no one seems to care as long as there’s Kate Beckinsale. I care. Why I loved Whiteout, besides the art and the grit and the perfection was the partnership that developed as the two women worked together to solve the murders.

They changed the Sharpe character to a guy; I’m not seeing it. Buy the graphic novel, it’s a great story.

#REJECTPROP8

Posted by lonelypond on May 27, 2009

My social conscience is kept between Edmonton and Twitter so this morning I woke up to #rejectprop8 hashtags + responses and the news that the California Supreme Court had split one of those legal fine lines. Oy. Here’s my favorite twitter/blog commenter on the subject.

MTV Splashpage responded with a cool post about 5 out and proud gay superheroes who might weigh in against Proposition 8. Made me want to spend more time reading up on Gothamites other than the Caped Crusader (The Question II + Batwoman to be specific. Greg Rucka’s original Whiteout is one of my favorite mini series — movie actually coming out in September — and he’ll be writing Batwoman.)

HOLIDAY WEEKEND

Posted by lonelypond on May 26, 2009

Three holidays on one day — that’s a lot. Memorial Day, Towel Day, and my birthday. And yes, feel free to leave birthday wishes in the comment feed.

Happy Memorial Day…that was all over Twitter this morning, along with plans for parades and barbecues and Gomez stranded in Cleveland with nothing to do and everything closed (if you believe their Twitter feed, they resorted to cannabilism)…but happy? Proud, maybe; perhaps solemn, but happy? I almost joined the military on two separate occasions — before college and after — but there was the possibility of dating Gayle vs. language school in Monterry and you’ll have to lie just doesn’t work for me. I knew people who led double lives to be in the military and it was a terrible and stupid strain. Before college, when I was being recruited for and actively considering a NROTC scholarship, I decided that since I didn’t know what I wanted to do for four years in college, committing myself for five years after was a mistake. And watching friends get up at 5 a.m. and earlier to do PT did nothing to convince me I’d made a mistake.

Gayle has some cousins and other relatives in the military and all have served in active war zones and it is a whole and constant family worry event. So a toast to all those who have and continue to serve.

Towel Day was a new one — it’s a celebration of Douglas Adams and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to The Galaxy. Someone picked a day two weeks after his death and everyone’s supposed to carry a towel. So now you know.

My birthday…well, I have a friend with the same birthday so we borrowed his cookout and had a blast playing Mah Johg. Fun. And it started off with my favorite Buffy* episode over breakfast. Oh, and cool old school Superman t-shirt and the rest of the Scott Pilgrim graphic novels for presents, so score several for the birthday hippo.

Tomorrow, #tamingshakespeare aka SHREW! auditions; tonight, RadioFlashCat and trying to finish a new Blink Kitty Love. Flash has had a rough weekend — two seizures Saturday. She hates summer weather and is really missing Pongo. But she likes Aberdeen.

And no, we didn’t make it to Night At The Museum. We rented Made of Honor — which was better than I expected, although as always romantic comedy plots hard to find. Great to see Sydney Pollack though — really must have a Tootsie night sometime.

*Twitter + internet rumor has it there may be another Buffy big screen feature sans Whedon and all the Buffy folks we know. And my favorite Buffy episode, well, that’s a conversation that’ll take an entire post. But there is a clue in this one.

MUSEUM FUN

Posted by lonelypond on May 22, 2009

No, I am not the biggest Ben Stiller fan — Keeping The Faith is my Ben Stiller movie of choice — but the addition of Amy Adams into the Night at the Museum mythos piqued my interest. Then FX played the orginal on Tuesday and it was fun, a little too much Ben Stiller with a monkey but I am an Owen Wilson and Dick Van Dyke fan and the museum coming to life after dark is just too cool a thought not to get caught up in.

So Night at The Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian has made the weekend to-do list. Click through for the Entertainment Weekly review.

And on a #tamingshakespeare note, audition notices did not appear in the local paper, which is really annoying (have to write quick press release now — DW has passed buck by shifting blame through PR committee and the newspaper and then back to me, welcome to the bureaucratic shuffle where no one acknowledges a mistake on their part — so I’m back to do it all myself.)

#tamingshakespeare music note: had the mad urge to listen to modern punksters Green Day’s 21st Century BreakDown so I acquired it (on sale, Target) and drove around listening to it…and my question is, is Green Day derivative with a purpose or even on purpose. Catchy bits, but it’s driving me back to the origins of punk rock, which makes Gayle happy…no last.fm station yet though.

Have a great weekend, museum visits or no.
