ROYALTY WAVES AS IT TWEETS + CRUISES BY

Posted by lonelypond on June 18, 2009

Not only is the Royal Shakespeare Company on Twitter, but they are running a tweet a love poem into “As You Like It” Contest(deadline 6/22/09). And the RSC search started with a Peter Aspden Culture column about tweeting, culture and the relevancy of the classics.

Good lunch with the FT with E-bay Billionaire and current philanthropist/movie mogul Jeff Skoll.

Vanessa Friedman, always informed and provoking of thought, this past weekend discusses Isabel Toledo.

Good Peter Aspden review of The World and Its Double: The Life and Work Of Otto Preminger.

And on a #tamingshakespeare note, have been working on Taming Of The Shrew both in rehearsals and out (currently trying to decide on image or word focus for t-shirt –actually, better to say, I am negotiating that point with Gayle. I have been informed that although it is not wide, the boardwalk problem has been solved) and I am enthralled by how much Taming is about clothes. Lines keep popping into my head: “I confess the cape” has always been one of my favorites. More recently, I have been mulling Petruchio’s succinct description of what his bride is getting into: “To me she’s married, not unto my clothes.” And then there is the lovely scene with the tailor where Shakespeare lets a character rant, and this one is right up there with the lovers’ ranting from Midsummer*. Out tailor is about 1/3 the size of our Petruchio so the contrast should be interesting:

“O monstrous arrogance! Thou liest, thou thread,
thou thimble,
Thou yard, three-quarters, half-yard, quarter, nail!
Thou flea, thou nit, thou winter-cricket thou!
Braved in mine own house with a skein of thread?
Away, thou rag, thou quantity, thou remnant;
Or I shall so be-mete thee with thy yard
As thou shalt think on prating whilst thou livest!
I tell thee, I, that thou hast marr’d her gown.”

I think if I were inclined to check myself back into an academic’s garb, I might be inclined to write a thesis on the clothes of Kate Hall. Could be scintillating.

And on a quick Disney note, the Wizards with Hannah On Deck event looks like a blast. I don’t think we have a show that night (7/17) — Flash is not liking the rehearsal schedule, seems to still be growing and now we have What I Like About You time after rehearsal. The N has, of course, incurred our wrath with DeGrassi again — bumping What I Like on the weekends….and yes, I still miss Radio Free Roscoe being on a time I’m actually awake.

That’s a wrap, I believe. Looking forward to seeing The Proposal on Friday, then Metamorphoses on Saturday (friend in the cast, plus, yes, fan of Ovid — are you really surprised?), Sunday, back to Shakespeare –we do Act IV and V until they sparkle which means I could not be home ’til Monday — Shrew has SO many characters on stage at most times. I had blanked out the horrible traffic jams.

*Hermia’s rant:
“Puppet? why so? ay, that way goes the game.
Now I perceive that she hath made compare
Between our statures; she hath urged her height;
And with her personage, her tall personage,
Her height, forsooth, she hath prevail’d with him.
And are you grown so high in his esteem;
Because I am so dwarfish and so low?
How low am I, thou painted maypole? speak;
How low am I? I am not yet so low
But that my nails can reach unto thine eyes.”

Followed later by Lysander’s dismissal:
“Get you gone, you dwarf;
You minimus, of hindering knot-grass made;
You bead, you acorn.”

Oh, just read the whole scene here (thank you, MIT)

MAKE OR BREAK CHARACTERS

Posted by lonelypond on April 11, 2009

Now, I haven’t hit TV reviews in a couple of weeks so if you don’t want to know whether I missed iCarly or Smallville, please click on this Pearls Before Swine comic encouraging reading.

Some episodes are better than others so I’m developing a theory that certain characters can make or break an episode. Examples:

CHARACTERS THAT CAN BREAK AN EPISODE:

Neville (iCarly) — the writers seem to have become addicted to Neville and have turned him from a villain with potential to a reason not to watch the show.

Spencer(iCarly): Good Spencer improves iCarly (iHate Sam’s Boyfriend, iKiss); bad Spencer just drags everything down (iWant a Car)

Sheldon (The Big Bang Theory): yes, he can wreck an episode, especially if it’s just Sheldon vs. Leonard as the main conflict. Sheldon really thrives in the group dynamic or when he has to go to someone for help — or someone comes to him.

Miley’s Boyfriend o’ the Episode (Hannah Montana): Jake Ryan great, but the one shot guys are terrible.

Alex (Wizards of Waverly Place): don’t do Alex right or mix her with a boy and you’re done. Let her play off Harper, Justin, Mr. Larritate or Mom — Quincinera episode rocks, Harper Knows also as well as the latest one with JoAnne Worley…

True (True Jackson): having True do something just to give us an episode is the surest way to torpedo one.

CHARACTERS THAT CAN MAKE AN EPISODE:

Sam(iCarly): especially when she has feelings: I love the iKiss episode.

Gibby (iCarly): iLOVE GIBBY, especially when dancing or minature golfing.

Howard (The Big Bang Theory): yes, I REALLY hate to say it but Howard can make an episode — The Peanut Factor, making out with Leslie Winkel, dropping everything for Penny’s cousin.

Rico (Hannah Montana); yes, Rico, another in the I can’t believe I’m saying this category, but Rico is the villain you want on your show.

Justin (Wizards): yes, he’s the epitome of geek cool (sorry Raj) and is the solid center the magic craziness spins around.

Lulu and Ryan (True Jackson): I wasn’t sure about them after the first episode but since then, they’ve been an irreplaceable part of the comedy.

Max (True Jackson): episodes with Max are better than episodes without Max (except the Reunion episode)…he’s got the perfect level of craziness and concern.

Sonny With A Chance — looking forward to the episode with Kelly Blatz tomorrow. Haven’t managed to work Aaron Stone into my schedule, but I think it will be an excellent opportunity for watching Tawni and Chad work out their comic excellence. It’s Flash’s new favorite show — with no RFR (boo The N), we occasionally watch it On Demand in the mornings.

Smallville: still not missing it. Almost watched the Zatanna episode, yes, brunette, fishnets, I’ll click in…but couldn’t stomach watching Lois play Chloe…haven’t heard anything compelling…watched The Recruit episode from Season 4, I think…one of the good ones with Lois.

Caught El Tigre yesterday with my late lunch. Fun…so colorful and full of so many jokes and sight gags it overflows. I love when it reminds me how much I like it.

And that should tide you over for awhile.

CUSHIONS + OTHER OUTRAGEOUS BEHAVIOR

Posted by lonelypond on March 3, 2009

And on a non rant note, tonight’s episode of The Big Bang Theory is one of this season’s funniest. Paintball fun — nice bits of physical comedy (the shootingof the cushion, the shooting of the Penny, the shooting of the Sheldon), great Sheldon, Penny, Leonard conversations, and Wolowitz and Winkel actually work together…got me up off my favorite cushion so I could get more air to laugh with…Looking forward to the upcoming episode(March 9th) with Summer Glau of the Sarah Connor Chronicles. Raj needs another Raj episode though.

Wizards of Waverly Place and Hannah Montana both seem to be going looser and a bit crazier with the comedy and it is working. From Harper Knows on, the let Alex be Alex and consequences be hanged trend really works. Miley seems more relaxed and comfortable playing Miley/Hannah and Emily Osmet and Mitchell Musso have always had good comic chemistry. Disney shows seem to have second season slumps, but Hannah is coming out of it in a way that bodes well for the movie’s prospects.

True Jackson survivor/secret episode funny in parts but they still seem to be stumbling over plotting. All actors still firing on all comic barrels.

Enjoyed Secrets of the Furious Five on NBC last week, yes, simple, but still fun. Time to rewatch Kung Fu Panda and School of Rock, lonelypond’s suggested Jack Black weekend double feature.

Caught Push in an actual cinema — chess with psychics and nice low key special effects. Liked Chris Evans, Dakota Fanning, Ming Na and Cliff Curtis. The woman at the center of the intrigue did nothing for me and the final fight scene was a bit ludicrous — I’m telekinetic so I’m going to bite your leg with an extra glow, which was disappointing after the actually intriguing gun and mirror battles. But I wanted to see more interaction between the hero group, so points for that. Might be an enjoyable rental if you’re in the mood for chess.

HOLIDAY CHEER AND NIGHTMARES + PIE

Posted by lonelypond on December 16, 2008

Well, a very convincingly nightmareish (yes, that’s the phrase and I’m using it twice) iCarly…too much of a nightmare and an excellent job by Miranda Cosgrove, but I can’t really call it a fun holiday episode. No, wonder of wonder, Hannah Montana pulls off the Christmas episode sweepstakes with the story of Hannah + the elf boy. Great exchanges between Oliver, Miley and Lilly and Robby Ray and Jackson were left to the riffing they do so very well. A solid hour by the Disney Channel if you add in the Wizards of Waverly Place Cupid gone amuck ep. Both casts are really solid comic ensembles and allow good writing and directing to shine.

Continuing the Disney note, the Suite Life on Deck seems to be stalling. Dylan Sprouse is doing great work, but the Cody gaga over Bailey storyline is more creepy/sad than funny (he’s no Agnes) and half the time London is written poorly. She’s a difficult character to write and it’s frustrating to see Brenda Song so often without the writing to support her comic talents — successful episode Boo You, quintessential London, not so much capital S STUPID as selfish and thoughtless. Bailey seems to be working when she’s not dragged down by having to deal with Cody. And sad to say, I like the teacher more since she spent an episode as a showgirl — I’m a sucker for a song and dance, and probably also a well turned ankle.

The True Jackson holiday episode wasn’t holiday enough, but I am liking Ryan more…it did prove that random pie violence among strangers can still provoke laughter (yes, three times — True’s taste at the end was good), but it’s not really a substitute for a food fight that develops in character (says the person who had Santa’s elves throw the makings of cookies(+chocolate syrup) all over her studio — it still smells a little like chocolate chip cookies are baking — for no real reason at all). Points for making vomiting more funny than gross — having it happen off screen helps. True seems to be developing nicely.

The Big Bang Theory — two weeks of very funny episodes. Leonard’s surgical resident girlfriend is showing some personality quirks that restores my faith in the no sane women would consider going on a date with Wolowitz rule. Sheldon’s computer generated voice knock great. Laundry room chats seem to be working.

Holiday banging: I loved Sheldon’s Leonard Nimoy reaction and Leonard’s whining about his leg on the couch with nobody noticing. Good to see Leonard and Penny retaining a bit of a spark. Also loved the Zac Efron reference; so very Wolowitz. You’d like to hate him, but he’s just so darn funny.

iHATCH LIZARD SPOCKS WITH KRYPTONITE

Posted by lonelypond on November 20, 2008

Well, watched the iPie episode of iCarly again and it wasn’t as funny as it was in my cream and custard flinging dreams. But it was bundled together with iHatch Chicks and iPromote Techfoots, two of my favorite episodes (I came upstairs to blog during iLike Him — close to my least favorite episode so far)…chick names are great: Shelly, Heuvo, Benedict, Omelet, Yoko and Poachy; good Freddy lines — “Sam ate them” for example — well, I guess it’s better if you watch the episode. The Freddie’s baby cousin storyline was one of the funnier things in the pie episode; Freddie’s mom is so funny with the deadpan “she does hate you.” Anyway, I could quote iCarly for awhile longer but that would make me hungry for “blubbery” muffins. If you’re not watching it yet and you can stand screaming and mania and running around and actors who can both physical and verbal comedy, well, why aren’t you watching it? The iGo Japan ratings were very respectable, highest for a Nick movie, so maybe they’ll make an iGo London soon.

What else? Big Bang Theory survived fairly funny without direct Sheldon-Penny confrontation so points for that. Rotate the talent a little. Mix up your pitches. It’s the way to make it to the big game. Liked the Mars Rover in a ditch bit, especially the call AA exchange. Nice to see Leonard and Penny as friends; glad there’s no lingering dating awkwardness; the Spock thing went on a bit too long but Rock Paper Scissors Lizard Spock is one of those phrases that gets funnier every time you say it.

Did I mention I was looking forward to Lana’s appearance on Smallville. That’s very strange for me and an indication that things are not well in the Superverse. More fun, more banter, more Lois, more heroics, a more cheerful and more often seen Green Arrow, and less of the moody lip pursing paramedic/supervillian in training. Kind of sad to see Kara go off, but she doesn’t really fit into to the Metropolis centric storyline. I would like to see Maggie Sawyer back, though.

Oh, for any fans of Flash, she’s off the new Hannah theme song but seems to like The Suite Life on Deck; no comment on iCarly. Patton likes watching basketball with Gayle. Pongo’s solid on Smallville, sports talk in the morning and Home Improvement — he likes guys; my little brother was his best friend when Beau and Pongo were growing up.

ADVENTURES IN WEEKEND WATCHING

Posted by lonelypond on November 17, 2008

Did not crack open the minty fresh Kung Fu Panda DVDm but did “Rip The Wrap*” on Adventures in Babysitting. We kept wandering by the $5.50 movie mini wall at Target and Gayle would go “oohhh Sabrina” and I would say “must get Adventures in Babysitting” and never be exactly sure why. The weeke before it went down to $4.75, I acquired my copy and we watched it on Friday — Saturday being reserved for the pie episode of iCarly –more on that further down. Well, I thought the main role was played by Kristy Swanson when it was actually Elisabeth Shue but once that was sorted out, the fun began.

It was a riot — a fun visit to both Chicago and the hairstyles of the late 80’s. Great soundtrack…plus the scene that embedded itself in my deep deep memory — “Babysittin’ Blues” — a tour de force of panic and performance. The heroine, of course, chooses the wrong guy(I call it the Ivanhoe effect, although with Ivanhoe, it was the wrong girl) — George Newbern’s frat boy beats out the classy but felonius Joe Gipp (Calvin Levels). Great adventure, solid performances. Good comic turn as the runaway, totally spooked best friend by Penelope Ann Miller. Now my soon to see again list of movie favorites includes The Shadow, Year of the Comet (can’t find on DVD) and The Saint.

Opening sequence where Elisabeth Shue dresses for a date and sings along to “Then He Kissed Me” (I believe) made the Lizzie McGuire Movie and Camp Rock openings look derivative (although Hilary Duff falls funnier than nearly anyone else currently in the business) — but it’s not derivative if it’s an homage to a classic, right. Anyway, pick up “Adventures in Babysitting” for $5.50 or $4.75. It is a classic — and if you don’t want to admit that sometimes you like movies without explicit sex and gore and very serious drama, then save it for some time when you’re feeling under the weather and want coddling. You’ll laugh and that’s always good medicine.

Oddly enough, the new Hannah Montana anticipated my call for the flinging of food with Miley tossing cooked chickens around, always fun, although Miley Cyrus isn’t my first choice for a physical comedian. Jason Earles ducks funny though.(NOTE TO DISNEY: Flash misses the old theme song) iCarly vs. pie wasn’t the physical pie flinging fest I had expected — Sam was reliably hungry and caustic (“wake me at quarter to pie”), Spencer was reliably over the top, and Freddy did a very good pie nirvana face while Miranda Cosgrove kept the craziness centered as usual. But considering how well all the actors do physical comedy and that they had 40 plus pies sitting around the apartment, too little craziness…and the last pie never got flung like a frisbee…ah well, that’s what anticipation and a vivid imagination’ll do for you. Still a solid episode.

True Jackson not quite so funny as the pilot, but that’s to be expected. Now we have to get to know the characters a little…I like Lulu better and Max is great, but Cricket was funny and I think the fanatasy sequence went on a little long and made me long for Wendie Malick’s fashion diva spoofing (Just Shoot Me.)

O.K., now I must write an article about walking tours and figure out dinner. Good night.

*Rip That Wrap –maybe the economy is now ready for this. The idea is instead of going out on a Friday night, you pull an unopened DVD(gift, impulse purchase, fell off a shelf and followed you home, 2 for 1 sale, spontaneously generated) off the top of the DVD pile and try to remember why you wanted it, accompanied by some form of comfort food — we opted for home made fajitas. Originally, I was pushing for a regular once a week event, but once a month seems more likely. Try it this weekend; drop off a review in the comment box.

CATS + MUSIC

Posted by lonelypond on August 1, 2008

Bjork…Pongo is a Bjork fan…he’s having a tough bout with arthritis and so I had to dig out his favorite CD, Medulla.  We’ve decided it’s some kind of primitive goddess worship.  I have two pastels, titled the primitive goddesses, that he used to lay down in front of, gazing at with the same worshipful look that he directs at the stereo playing Bjork.  We believe in the healing power of music here…whenever Hildy was having a bad day, we’d put on the James Galway Christmas album, even in July…in case of emergency, break out the flute player carols.  Patton seems to like nothing better than the terrified screams of smaller mammals while Flash is a determined Zac Efron Hannah Montana loving Disney pop fan — did you know that cats know when their favorite TV shows are on…she didn’t really like Camp Rock and is waiting for High School Musical’s 3 Disney Channel premiere.
