HARRISBURG NIGHTS

October 10, 2011

Wandering through my external hard drives looking for poetry and found this from my Shirazad days. 6 of us took a writing class, 5 of us kept meeting (1 moved to Michigan), we got a grant, published an anthology and a half, became a central part of the Central PA poetry scene for a year or so and then dispersed, only books + memories remaining. A group in Harrisburg used to do readings in an old underground bank vault. Wrote this during one of those nights. Bongo accompaniment might help set the pace.

Harrisburg Nights
by M.D. Norton

By the book
By the beat
By the cadence.

Audience drawn
Audience listens
Trapped
By the book
By the beat
By the cadence

Poetry vivid
Poetry ragged
Dragged in
By the book
By the beat
By the cadence

Stillness
Shoved through
The door
By the book
By the beat
By the cadence

Like AA
Hi, I’m…
Doing it
By the book
By the beat
By the cadence

Definitions lost
Feelings, thoughts
Drummed out
By the book
By the beat
By the cadence

Argument, anger
Sudden, soothed
And softened
By the book
By the beat
By the cadence

Tonight, alone
Quicker tongues
Twist, sounding
By the book
By the beat
By the cadence

They’re bouncing
Around
Down, town
By the book
By the beat
By the cadence

Voices persuade
Push, beg
You to
Buy the book
Buy the beat
Buy the cadence
